42nd CLASS Annual Research Conference
The 42nd Annual CLASS Research Conference will be held virtually on Friday, March 5, 2021. Due to the ongoing global pandemic, for our collective health and safety, the conference will convene online, via Zoom.
The University of Guam College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) Annual Research Conference is a multidisciplinary research conference platform for local, regional, and global scholars, scientists, visual and theatrical artists, and students to share their research and experiences. The committee accepts a range of proposals that include presentations of academic papers, illustrated talks, interactive panels and demonstrations, engaging performances and informative poster sessions.
The objective of the Annual Research Conference is to provide a forum for intellectual engagement and discussions on issues related and unique to Oceania, a global resource endowed with significant ecological and cultural diversity.
The past year has brought with it many new challenges and difficulties. This year's theme recognizes that, while the issues we face are ever changing, the vast accumulation of wisdom across generations can still guide us toward reliable ways of addressing those challenges. Submissions related to this theme will be given preference.
This year’s conference theme of “Modern Issues, Traditional Solutions” acknowledges the many new challenges facing this region while reminding of the wisdom gained from similar challenges in the past. The theme is meant to generate insightful conversations, promote the strength and well-being of the Pacific nations, and highlight the vast tapestry of knowledge of the cultures of the Pacific.
The conference will include presentations by local, regional, and global scholars, scientists, visual artists, performing artists, and students on their discoveries and experiences specific to Oceania.
The conference will also include a virtual art show hosted by the Isla Center for the Arts featuring works by students, faculty, and community artists.

We are proud to announce this year's Keynote Speaker for the CLASS Annual Research
Conference is Lieutenant Governor Joshua Tenorio.
Joshua Franquez Tenorio is the 10th elected Lieutenant Governor of Guam. He lives in Talofofo and was raised in Sinajåña by his parents, the late Jesus Atoigue Tenorio and Therese Taitano Franquez Tenorio. His late grandfather Jose Cruz Franquez is his role model.
Lieutenant Governor Tenorio graduated from the Guam Community College Vocational High School. He served as Speaker of the 17th Guam Youth Congress and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History from the University of Guam. He is a Fellow of the Institute for Court Management at the National Center for State Courts and is a certified court manager and executive.
Tenorio began his government service as a Caseworker and Legislative Assistant to Congressman Robert A. Underwood in the U.S. House of Representatives. Upon returning to Guam, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Carl T.C. Gutierrez, concurrently serving as Director of the Bureau of Planning and later as Deputy Director of the Bureau of Budget Management & Research. He led disaster response and recovery efforts as the Governor’s Authorized Representative to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Typhoons Paka, Chata’an, Pongsona and the 2001 earthquake.
In the Guam Legislature, Tenorio served as Chief of Staff to Senator Randy Cunliffe and Speaker Benjamin J.F. Cruz. As Administrator of the Courts, Tenorio led efforts to improve the criminal and juvenile justice systems, expand drug courts and language access programs, and upgrade law enforcement training standards for the marshals and probation services.
He brings experience in Guam’s construction, media, and automobile industries, having served most recently as Vice President of Guam Autospot. He is a former member of the Guam Contractors Association. Lieutenant Governor Tenorio is the past Chairman of the Guam Preservation Trust, Guam Historic Preservation Review Board, Department of Chamorro Affairs Board of Trustees, Pa’a Taotao Tano, and Films by Youth Inside. He has served on the Guam Election Commission, Sinajåña Municipal Planning Council, and has also served as Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Guam, and Campaign Manager of the 2008 Obama for America Guam Campaign. Lieutenant Governor Tenorio is an active volunteer on the Guam-CNMI Committee for Employers Support of the Guard and Reserve and is a charter member of the Talofofo Ranger Lions Club.
The worldwide pandemic and its resulting effects on our island have forced us to re-evaluate how we deal with social, economic and environmental issues. While both addressing the pandemic and planning for our recovery, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Governor Joshua Tenorio root their decision making in the underpinnings of the traditional Chamorro values that have always guided our society. Lt. Governor Tenorio’s keynote will focus on the overarching belief that we have a responsibility to care and provide for all members of our community, prioritizing the protection and care for our most vulnerable. He will explain the efforts the administration is taking to realize expanded opportunities for everyone. He will discuss the introduction of educational resources for distance learning directly to families, the addition of community learning centers, support for families through addressing substance abuse by expanding treatment and recovery programs, and reinforcing sustainability through the Guam Green Growth (G3) initiative and rebuilding viable traditional industries like agriculture and aquaculture.
